1、 The concept of heavy oil: The residue left after the distillation of crude oil to extract gasoline, kerosene, and diesel, and the remaining oil after further vacuum distillation to extract lubricating oil is also called heavy oil. The combustible components in heavy oil are relatively high, with carbon content ranging from 86% to 89% and hydrogen content ranging from 10% to 12%; There are very few other components such as nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. The heating capacity of heavy oil is very high, generally ranging from 40000 to 42000 kJ/kg. It has a high combustion temperature and strong flame radiation ability, making it an excellent fuel for steel production.

2、 For use as fuel for heavy oil burners, in addition to requiring high heat generation, it is also required to:

(1) Low viscosity. In order to facilitate pipeline transportation and improve combustion efficiency through spray atomization, heavy oil has a high viscosity due to its high paraffin content. Preheating is required during use to reach 100 ℃ or above to reduce viscosity.

(2) The freezing point should be low. The general solidification temperature of heavy oil is 22-36 ℃. For heavy oil with a large amount of paraffin and a high solidification point, appropriate heating measures should be taken to facilitate transportation and loading and unloading.

(3) The flash point temperature is high. A higher preheating temperature can be used for easy transportation and atomization. Generally, the flash point of heavy oil is between 180~330 ℃, which is higher than the temperature that needs preheating.

(4) The mechanical impurities and water content in the oil should be low. Excessive impurities and high water content not only reduce the heat generation of heavy oil, but also cause blockage of the heavy oil burner and flame fluctuations during use. Therefore, filtration is necessary, such as forming an emulsion of oil and water, which can improve the combustion effect.

(5) Low sulfur content. The general sulfur content is 0.15%~0.30%, but there are also a few heavy oils with sulfur content as high as 2%, which can cause adverse consequences during use.

Heavy oil can be used as fuel for blast furnace injection, heating furnace, iron ore sintering, and ignition and roasting of iron ore pellets in steel plants. However, after the second oil crisis in the 1970s, oil prices rose, and heavy oil could also be used to produce other chemical raw materials. Therefore, the amount of heavy oil used by steel mills decreased and coal powder was replaced.
